Emulsion lifts with instant film in our experimental photography class. Good stuff. The assignment was to make a photo montage. Each student was given a body party and the final goal is to piece together a Frankenstein. We’re allowed to use anything, whether it be real body parts or other objects that may resemble the body part. I got the left shoulder and I decided to use some bamboo leaves to shape out the shoulder itself. I used a day lab scanner to scan my images. Since I used bamboo leaves I thought it would be appropriate to put a panda bear somewhere in the mix. Anyway, after taking the photo we’d cook them in hot water and that causes the image to lift. We transfer it to a container of cold water and life the image and transfer it to whatever surface we’re working on, for me it was a 8 x 10 piece of watercolor paper. We used a modge podge type of adhesive paste to keep the images down. I would overlap the images until I got something I was satisfied with. Yeah, that part took a really long time because the edges would always roll and fold and do all kinds of crazy stuff. The hard work paid off though. (:
